What is ISEE Select™?

ISEE Select™ is an intuitive browser application that uses a unique methodology to calculate bullish and bearish investor sentiment for almost any security whose options are traded on the ISE. ISEE Select uses the same calculation methodology as our well-respected ISEE Sentiment Index. Unlike the traditional put/call ratio, the ISEE Select sentiment is based on opening long customer transactions only. Trades by market makers and firms are excluded as these tend to skew sentiment value. As a result, ISEE Selects sentiment index calculation provides a more accurate reflection of true investor sentiment. For more details on our calculation methodology, please refer to http://www.iseoptions.com/sentiment.

Are these sentiment values calculated in real-time?

The intraday values are updated every twenty minutes. The approximate times that the new values can be retrieved 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 50 minutes after the hour. Subscribers must click the 'Get Data' button to refresh the displayed values.

top

Are the updated sentiment values cumulative?

Yes, all subsequent intraday calculations use the cumulative number of trades for all calls and all puts to open. All subsequent intraday calculations use the cumulative number of trades for all calls and all puts to open.

top

How often are the moving averages updated?

The 10, 20, and 50 day moving averages are updated once a day.

top

What is the formula used to calculate sentiment?

ISEE sentiment is computed by dividing opening Long Call options by Opening Long Put options.

For example, if 5,000 call options to open traded and 2,000 put options to open traded, the sentiment value would be 250.

top

How do I interpret this data?

Based on our unique formula for calculating sentiment, a very low sentiment value indicates that more put options are trading than call options. Conversely, a very high sentiment value indicates that more call options are trading than put options. Long positions of call options to open are generally viewed as a bullish transaction and long positions of put options are generally viewed as a bearish transaction. Therefore, a higher ISEE value represents more bullish sentiment for the underlying security and a lower ISEE value represents a more bearish sentiment for the underlying security.

Why are some of the sentiment values so high for individual securities compared to the ISEE Index?

The ISEE Index value is calculated on hundreds of securities so large trades in individual securities are smoothed out in the ISEE Index i.e. the annual high is 232 and the annual low is 63. If you retrieve the sentiment value using the ISEE Select Query Tool you are looking at the sentiment value for a single security. If you click on the chart icon in the data display window, you will notice the calculated values for ISEE Select can range from very low to very high in comparison to the ISEE Index. For comparison purposes, you should look at the range for a single security when possible and also see how that value compares with the average values for the last 10, 20, and 50 day averages which are also displayed. The charting icon will display the historical sentiment values over time which is another useful tool to assist you with your analysis and may help you interpret the current sentiment value.
